Luis Velarde is currently a national video editor at The Washington Post, where he oversees breaking news and major visual projects from inception to launch. Luis facilitates collaboration across teams, develops coverage and distribution plans, and identifies opportunities for innovation and experimentation across platforms. In 2020, he was part of a Post team that was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting for its “2°C: Beyond the Limit” series, which showed that extreme climate warming is already upon us.

Previously, Luis led the breaking news and features video team at Univision News Digital, covering the U.S. and Latin America through verticals, explainers, visuals for interactives, and more. Under his management, the team won several local, national, and 
international awards.  

Luis has also covered earthquakes and unrest in Latin American countries, the plight of fishermen in the South China Sea, and more recently, the war on drugs in the Philippines.

He has a master’s in journalism from Georgetown University, a B.A. in communications and marketing from Universidad Privada de Valle, and has taught video storytelling and news digital essentials at 
Georgetown master's of journalism program.

Luis is passionate about multi-platform storytelling and building kind and happy creative teams.
